Autor: Desconhecido
Material/Técnica: Metal/fundição/cinzelamento
Século: XIX
Procedência: Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário e Capela São Benedito

Historical Data: During the Mass of Unity, the Blessing of Holy Oils is held, to be used by parishes for the celebration of the sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick. It is not known precisely how and when the joint blessing of the three liturgical oils began. The reason for setting this celebration on Holy Thursday is due to the fact that this is the last day on which Mass is celebrated before the Easter Vigil. The following oils are blessed: Confirmation Oil - A mixture of oil and balm, meaning fullness of the Holy Spirit, revealing that the Christian must radiate “the good perfume of Christ”. It is used in the sacrament of Confirmation (Confirmation) when the Christian is confirmed in grace and in the gift of the Holy Spirit, to live as an adult in the faith. This oil is also used in the sacrament of the priesthood, to anoint the “chosen ones” who will work in proclaiming the Word of God, leading the people and sanctifying them in the ministry of the sacraments. The color that represents this oil is white gold. Oil of Catechumens - Catechumens are those who prepare to receive Baptism, whether adults or children, before the water rite. This oil means the liberation from evil, the strength of God that penetrates the catechumen, liberates it and prepares it for birth by water and the Spirit. Its color is red. Oil of the Sick - It is used in the sacrament of the sick, erroneously known as “extreme function”. This oil means the strength of the Spirit of God for the trial of sickness, for the strengthening of the person to face pain and even death, if it is God's will. Its color is purple.
