Dados Históricos: Jesus é o bom pastor dos Seus crentes, assim como os pastores eram de suas ovelhas. Um bom pastor protege suas ovelhas e cuida delas com carinho. Jesus faz o mesmo com todos que creem e põem sua confiança nele. Na Bíblia, os líderes políticos e religiosos muitas vezes eram comparados com pastores de ovelhas. A sociedade nos tempos da Bíblia vivia muito à base da agricultura e da criação de gado, por isso entendiam muito bem o trabalho de um pastor. Sendo diferente de um ajudante contratado que talvez fugisse em face do perigo, o rebanho pertencia ao pastor que ficaria para defendê-las. Ele tinha uma verdadeira preocupação e afeto pelo que lhe pertencia. Jesus ilustra como o pastor cuida de seu rebanho ao protegê-las do mau tempo, dos ladrões e de animais predadores. Ele as amava, protegia e, se necessário, daria a sua vida no processo. O propósito de Jesus o Bom Pastor é dar vida e proteger da destruição. Você pode estar se perguntando por que Jesus precisou dar a Sua vida pela nossa proteção. Ao se identificar como o bom pastor, Jesus estava cumprindo as profecias do Antigo Testamento sobre um pastor que iria liderar o povo de Deus. Esse pastor seria diferente dos outros pastores (líderes), que exploravam o povo e não cuidavam dele. O bom pastor, enviado por Deus, iria restaurar seu povo.

Historical data: The Good Shepherd is a pericope found in John 10: 1-21 in which Jesus appears as the "good shepherd" who gives his life for his sheep. The same metaphor can be seen in Psalm 23 (22). In the Gospels, the image of the "Good Shepherd" always appears in reference to Jesus and he does not allow himself to lose any of his sheep. 'I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. He who is a mercenary, not a shepherd, to whom the sheep do not belong, sees the wolf coming, abandons the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches and scatters them. The mercenary runs away, because he is a mercenary, and does not care about the sheep. I am the good shepherd, I know my sheep, and those who are mine, know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. I also have other sheep that are not of this fold, these are also necessary for me to bring them; they will hear my voice, and there will be a flock and a shepherd. That's why the Father loves me, because I give my life to resume it. Nobody takes it from me, but I give it to myself. I have the right to give it, and I have the right to resume it; this commandment I received from my Father.”
